How We Selected the Best Airbnb Mattresses

Top vacation rental hosts highly rated and recommended all the mattresses on this list. Aside from first-hand recommendations, we also considered reviews from Airbnb hosts online, affordability, durability, materials, if you can purchase one easily, and how space efficient it is.

See how we determined the best mattresses for your vacation rental:

  • Host Recommendations: We reached out to and took into consideration recommendations from vetted Airbnb hosts.
  • Online Reviews: Then we searched for each of the mattresses online and checked their reviews to see which of the mattresses are worth it.
  • Price: Mattresses for your rental shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg; we considered prices, and rated affordable mattresses higher.
  • Durability: Your mattress should withstand the test of time (and hundreds of guests). Aside from the mattress’s durability, we also considered how good its warranty is.
  • Mattress Material: Foam, spring, latex… the list goes on. A mattress’s material affects its durability and firmness, and we looked into various mattresses with different materials to find the best of the best.
  • Accessibility: Purchasing a mattress from a brick-and-mortar shop may not be the best option for Airbnb hosts who live far away from their rentals. All the mattresses on your list are available online with delivery to your doorstep.
  • Efficiency: Finally, not all rentals have a ton of space. We took into consideration how space efficient a mattress is, how many sizes are available, and if it can fit into a wide variety of bed frames (like a Murphy bed, for example).

From our criteria, we determined that the best mattress for your Airbnb is the Linespa Foam. It’s highly recommended by both the hosts we reached out to and by reviews online. Plus, it’s relatively affordable, can be purchased easily, comes in a variety of sizes, and comes with a 10-year warranty with free returns within 365 days.

1. Linenspa Foam and Innerspring Hybrid: Best Overall Mattress

Linenspa’s hybrid mattress provides amazing support for its price (Source: Amazon)

Since 2003, Linenspa has been producing quality (yet affordable) mattresses. That the company has been around for nearly 20 years—and has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon with over a hundred thousand reviews—is a testament to just how great this mattress is. It’s our top pick for budget-conscious hosts, coming in at just $199.99 for a twin on both Amazon and the Linenspa website.

As a hybrid, meaning it’s made of a mix of steel coils and memory foam, it’s less firm than a pure foam mattress. Still, it boasts a medium-firm softness that’s great for a wide variety of sleeping styles and is sure to appeal to your Airbnb guests. It also comes in 6 different sizes (from twin to a California king) so that it can fit a majority of bed frames.

Take note that the few negative reviews online state that it’s not as firm as expected; if you’re on the lookout for a firmer mattress, then we suggest picking a pure memory foam mattress or even a latex foam mattress. Alternatively, you can purchase a mattress topper—which Linenspa also offers—to make your mattress firmer and easier to clean, as unlike the Emma mattress featured above, this hybrid mattress does not come with a removable and washable cover.

“[My guests] are always shocked to hear it's an inexpensive [mattress] model!” - Betsy Cornwell, New York Times bestselling author and Airbnb host

 2. Lucid Hybrid Mattress: Best Durable Mattress

With five layers of foam and coil, Lucid’s offering is extra durable (Source: Amazon)

Lucid has been selling highly rated mattresses for almost 10 years, and this hybrid mattress is one of their most raved-about. With a generous mix of four layers of foam and one layer of pocketed coil, expect Lucid’s hybrid mattress to last you around a decade—perfectly matched with its 10-year warranty. Get it starting at $280.96 on Amazon (for a twin), or search the Lucid website for more.

Lucid’s mattress tries to appeal to a wide variety of sleepers: it has a 1.5-inch top layer of charcoal memory foam that regulates body temperature and dissipate heat (as memory foam is notorious for trapping heat). Its second and third layers both provide extra support and alignment. Finally, its pocketed coils add extra support and bounce to the mattress, while also providing more airflow than just a pure memory foam layer.

Because the coils are individually wrapped, this mattress provides less motion transfer than its counterparts. This is a godsend for guests, and especially for couples, that have trouble sleeping in the same bed.

Though this mattress ticks a lot of boxes, take note that the cover is not removable (unlike the Emma mattress). The Lucid mattress has a zip around the top, but removing it releases the fiberglass particles in the mattress. Instead, we highly suggest purchasing a washable mattress protector so you can easily keep your rental clean.

3. Tuft & Needle Original Mattress: Most Space Efficient

The Tuft & Needle Original is only 9.5 inches thick (Source: Amazon)

Tuft & Needle is relatively new to the mattress world, having started in 2012. Still, they have some of the most recommended mattresses available. We love the Tuft & Needle Original for its comfort and relatively affordable price tag; a twin costs $633.25 on both Amazon and T&N’s website.

Unlike other pure foam mattresses, Tuft & Needle relies on only 2 layers: a 3-inch adaptive foam layer that contours to your body, relieves pressure points, and regulates body temperature, and a support layer that keeps the mattress firm (but not too firm). This adds up to a pretty slim 9.5-inch mattress that doesn’t skimp on comfort.

This is perfect for tight Airbnb’s with more unusual beds, like Murphy beds. Standard Murphy beds fit mattresses from 9 to 12 inches thick, so having a 9.5-inch mattress ensures that this will fit a majority of wall beds with no hassle.

One of the biggest drawbacks of this mattress, and pure foam mattresses is that it sags. Some customers report that the sagging begins quickly—these reviews are rare, and mostly deal with defective products. Fortunately, T&N has a 100-night trial and 10-year warranty on their mattresses, with free returns.

“Tuft & Needle ticks several boxes as one of the most well-liked low-cost online mattresses… plus, a queen costs only $895, which is really cheap. It's what we like to refer to as THE affordable bed-in-a-box.” - Corrie Duffy, food blogger at Corrie Cooks

4. Saatva Classic Mattress: Top Luxurious Mattress

Provide the most luxurious sleep experience with a Saatva Classic (Source: The Sleep Matters)

If you’re looking to create a luxurious holiday experience for your guests, down to their sleep, then look no further than the Saatva Classic mattress. Launched in 2010, Saatva is known around the country for their ultra-luxe mattresses which are handcrafted with only the most premium of materials. Check it out on the Saatva website.

The Saatva Classic has five layers, all created thoughtfully for amazing sleep. The first layer is a thick, 3-inch pillow top quilting which provides support to the center third of the mattress. It’s made of breathable organic cotton and treated with an antimicrobial treatment so that your mattress stays fresh for longer. Saatva also uses a natural, plant-based flame barrier instead of fiberglass, like most of the other mattresses on our list.

The second layer is a thin memory foam in the middle of the mattress to provide better spine alignment and lower body support, while the third layer is made of individually encased coils for better airflow, even more support, and less motion transfer. The fourth layer prevents sagging edges, while the fifth is a base coil layer made from pure steel for maximum airflow and overall bed support.

All these layers add up to a mattress that appeals to a wide range of sleepers. For even more variety, Saatva lets you choose from three different firmness levels. Sleeping on a Saatva will also make your renters feel like they’re vacationing in a luxury hotel.

Unfortunately, the Saatva doesn’t come cheap (or extremely accessible). Saatva doesn’t have an Amazon store, and buying it directly from Saatva will cost you nearly $1000 for a twin-sized mattress. Still, it’s well worth the purchase, especially if you’re looking for a luxury experience to impress your guests.

“People who stay [in my rental] frequently compliment the mattress and assume I splashed out.” - Betsy Cornwell, New York Times bestselling author and Airbnb host

5. Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress: The Coolest Mattress

Keep cool with Casper’s new mattress (Source: Amazon)

The coolest mattress around—both literally and figuratively—has to be Casper’s recent addition to their mattress line. Launched in 2021, the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow mattress has a whopping price tag of $1950 for a twin, and is available on both Amazon and the Casper website.

At this price tag you should expect a lot from your mattress, and the Casper does not disappoint. The top layer is made of a breathable, patented material that moves heat immediately, plus a cooling gel—keeping your bed cool to the touch. Casper then adds HeatDelete™ Bands to pull heat away from the body while you sleep. The mattress also has three layers of breathable, perforated foam to maximize airflow.

All this on top of an ultra-supportive and ergonomic layer with gel pods that provide more support than just pure foam alone. With Casper, not only can your guests expect a breezy sleep, but healthy spinal alignment too.

With all the cool features of this mattress, it’s difficult to think of a downside except for its price. Still, if you have the budget for it, give it a shot especially as it comes with a 100-night risk-free guarantee (with free returns for continental North America), and a 10-year warranty.

“My guests rave about the mattress in my listing!” - Betsy Cornwell, New York Times bestselling author and Airbnb host

6. Emma Original: Best Budget Pick

The Emma has layers of foam for increased firmness and breathability (Source: Emma)

The Emma Original is a European-made mattress that’s won many awards since it launched in 2013. Emma offers two mattresses—the Original, all-foam mattress which we recommend, and a hybrid mattress that’s slightly firmer—and you can buy both through their website or via Amazon starting at $495. Note that their website offers a generous 365-day risk-free trial, while Amazon only offers a 100-night trial.

The Emma Original has five layers, with three layers of foam.

The first, non-foam layer is breathable, moisture-wicking, washable, and removable. The second blue foam layer is made of cooling memory foam that regulates body temperature. The third layer is motion isolating and ergonomic; limiting motion transfer from your sleeping partner and providing spinal alignment. The last layer of foam is extremely durable and prevents sag.

All these layers contribute to a medium-firm mattress that’s easily cleaned, comfortable, and durable—the trifecta for vacation rental hosts that need a highly comfortable mattress for a variety of sleepers. The Emma also comes in many sizes, from a twin to a California king, so it can fit any bed frame that you may have on hand.

Unfortunately, it is quite pricey. At $495 for a twin (on sale), it isn’t the most affordable mattress you can buy, especially if you plan on changing your rental’s mattress every few years. Still, we—and tens of thousands of happy customers—believe it’s worth the investment.

“It is a comfy all-foam mattress that is suitable for couples and many sleepers. Even though a hybrid mattress is more supportive, you don't really need one since your visitors will only stay for a short time.” - Corrie Duffy, food blogger at Corrie Cooks and Airbnb host.

Key Takeaway

The best mattresses for your Airbnb or vacation rental will leave your guests feeling refreshed and wanting to extend their stay. These 6 mattresses all do the trick, but our top pick still goes to the Linespa. It has tons of rave reviews, comes in a variety of sizes, is available on different platforms, and is fairly affordable too. Order one today, and give your guests the best sleep of their lives.
